Inuit Art Quarterly, 27.4
Established in 1985 and registered as a charitable organization in 1988, the Inuit Art Foundation provides support to Canada’s Inuit arts communities and is the sole national body mandated to promote Inuit artists and art within Canada and internationally. One of the most significant contributions of the Foundation is the publication of the Inuit Art Quarterly, now in its twenty-eighth year of publication. The IAQ is a magazine of scholarly and popular articles that connect Inuit Nunangat and readers around the world.
This issue features The Mythical Physical Walrus which highlights the drawn and written works of Ningeokuluk Teevee, with an introduction by Leslie Boyd. Ningeokuluk’s story is printed in English and Inuktitut. Originally written in 2010, Mythical Physical Walrus expresses Ningeokuluk’s desire to share her world with a wider audience. Following this, an interview with master carver Kiawak Ashoona, and sadly one of his last interviews before his death in late 2014. Lauded with several awards for his achievements in the arts, Kiawak enjoyed one of the longest artistic careers of anyone leaving in Kinngait. Kiawak is credited with being one of the first Inuit artists to bring the art to the rest of the world. Other highlights from this issue include an artist's tribute to Ohotaq Mikkigak, notes from the IAF's recent visit to Cambridge Bay, exhibition reviews, and a Curator's choice!
